Rev. Virgil Boysaw, Jr.

Appointed to Mt. Calvary UMC July 2023

Rev. Virgil Boysaw, Jr. was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio to Rev. Virgil Boysaw, Sr. and Shirley Ann Boysaw. He graduated from John Adams High and relocated to Maryland to attend college. He graduated from Bowie State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduation, Rev. Boysaw, Jr. began a retail career managing stores for Bakers Shoes, Footlocker, Payless Shoes, and Block Buster Video.

After receiving the call to ministry in 1995, Rev. Boysaw, Jr.  attended Wesley Seminary and graduated from Chesapeake Bible College and Seminary. Ordained in 1997, he served as youth leader for Union Memorial UMC, Youth Pastor at Mt. Zion UMC in Lothian, Maryland, and co-Pastor with Charles F.T. Henry at Interfaith Christian Ministries for 10 years. He also served in the Annapolis District of the United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Charles Creek, Rev. Ray McDonald, and Rev. Diana Proctor Dixon. He also served on the staff of Pastor Shirlette D. Boysaw at Franklin UMC in Churchton, Maryland.

Rev. Boysaw, Jr. continued his education at Bowie State University where he received a Master of Public Administration degree.  He later served as the Prevention Coordinator of Anne Arundel County for the Health Department, State Program Manager of Prevention Services for the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration in Catonsville, Maryland and as Director of Juvenile Services for the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families.

Rev. Boysaw, Jr. is currently an adjunct faculty member for the Anne Arundel Community College, as well as Director of the Drug Free Communities and Prevention Services Supervisor of the Cecil County Department of Health. He also sits on various boards and committees including the Creative Arts Outreach Ministries, Inc. and Charting Careers, Inc. and Communities Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.

Rev. Boysaw, Jr. is a graduate of the 2016 Cecil Leadership Institute class and was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan to serve on the Maryland Youth Camp Safety Committee.  Rev. Sarah Schlieckert, District Superintendent of the Annapolis District appointed him to serve on the District MAP Team to help the district and local churches to think strategically about new faith initiatives.

Rev. Boysaw, Jr. is married to the lovely Rev. Shirlette D. Boysaw (41 years). Their son, Virgil Boysaw, III, is the Director of Music at the Excel Academy in Prince George County and Music Director at John Wesley UMC along with a daughter-in-law Julia, and one granddaughter, Riley Nico Boysaw.

Rev. Boysaw, Jr. believes that “a man is not a fool to lose what he can never keep in order to gain what he can never lose”.
